Bio-CNG: A Green and Renewable Automotive Fuel
Bio-CNG, also known as Bio-Methane, is a purified form of Bio-gas. The compressed form of Bio-CNG is known as Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG).
CBG can be produced from multiple sources such as agricultural waste, cattle dung, sugarcane press mud, municipal waste, sewage treatment plant waste, etc. In order to make it suitable for automotive use, the bio-gas is purified by removing multiple impurities such as hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water vapour, and then compressed as Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG). Automotive-grade bio-CNG must have methane content of more than 90%. CBG has calorific value and other properties similar to CNG and hence can be utilized as green renewable automotive fuel. There is an Indian standard (IS 16087:2013) for the composition of automotive-grade bio-CNG (methane) fuel.
