LNG Engine Technology

LNG Engine Technology

SQT is at the forefront of the adaptation of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) technology in India. We excel in managing challenges such as gas variation and knock detection, and ensuring safety features are robust enough to mitigate knocking and other potential issues encountered in LNG engines and vehicles.

We provide complete LNG solutions from cryogenic storage tanks to LNG reducers/regulators. We have a partnership with leading LNG cryogenic storage tank manufacturers and have an in-house manufacturing facility for LNG pressure reducer/regulator, LNG injectors, filters, ECU, tubing & fittings, etc.

SQT is the first company in India to provide a complete LNG system to two leading Indian commercial vehicle manufacturers and support them in developing their first LNG vehicles.

LNG Overview: Advantages, Storage Solutions, and Limitations

LNG (Liquefied natural gas) is a liquid form of natural gas that is liquefied by reducing its temperature to about -162 degrees C. Due to very low temperature, LNG has a tendency to boil off. To overcome the problem, it has been stored in vacuum-insulated, double-walled, cryogenic storage tanks. LNG has a similar gas composition to CNG, the only difference is that LNG has been cooled down to a liquid stage for higher energy storage density, ease of transportation, and safety due to low-pressure storage. LNG is typically transported in specially designed cryogenic tanks installed on ships or trucks, and it is stored in insulated tanks at receiving terminals or facilities.

The primary benefit of LNG range enhancement compared to CNG, as the liquefaction process reduces the volume of natural gas. For a particular storage tank volume, LNG provides about three times longer vehicle range.

The liquefaction process of natural gas involves the removal of certain impurities such as dust, water, heavy hydrocarbons, etc. Due to impurities removal, LNG is slightly cleaner than CNG.

LNG also has multiple challenges such as gas boils-off, variation in gas composition over time, relatively high knocking tendency, etc.
